UPDATE
City of Vancouver, Veterans free parking.
Effective 03 November 2020, Vancouver City Council approved a by-law change that will give veterans free parking for one year as a pilot project.
Pilot program details:
Effective 03 November 2020. Veteran drivers, with veterans’ licence plates, can park for free at metered parking and Easy Park lots within Vancouver. Veterans must obey posted time limits, but can park for free during the allowed time.
Staff to report back Fall 2021
Staff will monitor the pilot project and report back to Council in the fall of 2021 to report back on uptake and in consultation with veteran’s serving organizations.
November 26, 2019 Announcement
The British Columbia Veterans Commemorative Association attended the Vancouver City Council Meeting in support Councillor Melissa De Genova’s Veterans Free Parking resolution unanimously approved on 26 November 2019.
Herewith a copy of Vancouver’s Council directive to Staff.
THEREFOR BE IT RESOLVED THAT Council direct staff to explore the possibility of a process to allow eligible holders of a BC Veterans license plates and current serving members of the Canadian Armed Forces to park their vehicle for free, subject to the time limits already in place, at City of Vancouver parking meters, Easy Park lots, surface lots, and Park Board operated parking facilities; including Stanley Park, Queen Elizabeth Park, the Vancouver Aquatic Centre, and all Vancouver Community Centres.
FURTHER THAT Council direct staff to report back to Council by October 2020 with recommendations and plans to deliver a process by November 11, 2020, for year-around free parking for Veterans and current serving members of the Canadian Forces, at all parking locations currently offered by the City of Vancouver.
To date, BCVCA has identified Veteran Free Parking has been established as follows:
City of Vancouver – Allows complimentary [parking on a year around basis for vehicles bearing a “Veteran” license plate. NOTE: To commence effective 11 Nov 2020.
Other Municipalities – Municipalities are responsible for City By-laws authorizing free parking for Veterans. It is best if you contact the municipalities you frequent to obtain the most up to date information.
